| COUNTY ANNOUNCES CORRECTION TO REVISED WATER USE POLICY | ||||
|
Rome, Ga. - The Floyd County Water Department announced last week that it will allow the exemptions to the level four outdoor water restriction that Governor Perdue announced in February. The County’s release stated that existing swimming pools could be filled. Newly installed pools can be filled as well, which was not made clear in the original release. As approved in an order issued by Carol Couch, Director of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, on February 11, 2007, hand watering will be allowed for 25 minutes per day on an odd-even schedule between midnight and 10:00 a.m. Odd numbered addresses can water on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Even numbered addresses can water Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Hand watering is defined as one person with one garden hose with a spray nozzle that shuts off when it is released. Please remember that newly installed landscaping which has been in place less than 30 days may be watered up to three days a week within the hours of 12:00 midnight to 10:00 a.m. only for 10 consecutive weeks and during plant installation. Odd-numbered addresses may water newly installed landscaping Tuesday, Thursdays and Sundays. Even-numbered addresses may water newly installed landscaping Mondays, Wednesday and Saturdays. Any person watering newly installed landscaping must register with the Outdoor Water Use Registration Program at www.urbanagcouncil.com/ beginning March 15, 2008. For additional information regarding this program please contact the local UGA Cooperative Extension Office at (706) 295-6210. The County would like to remind residents that even though the exception to the level four drought restrictions will be allowed at this time, the county will continue to monitor our overall water use and how we are conforming to the state’s water use reduction mandates. If drought conditions continue into the summer months, it is highly likely that the county’s water system will again be strained and the exemptions allowed may be discontinued. Additionally, if the state implements some type of financial penalty for not meeting their water use reduction mandates, the county may be forced to discontinue the exemptions. ###
