We live in a different world than we did before September 11, 2001. We are more aware of our vulnerabilities, more appreciative of our freedoms, and more understanding that we have a personal responsibility for the safety of our families, our neighbors and our nation. But we also know that we can take action now to help protect our families, help reduce the impact an emergency has on our lives, and help deal with the chaos if an incident does occur. Floyd County offers several ways for its citizens to become involved in the emergency response capability for their area. EMA Rescue Unit Overview

The Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) was created from a model developed by the City of Los Angeles Fire Department in 1987. Since 1994, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been promoting nationwide use of CERT and many communities have established these teams. By becoming a CERT volunteer and completing the training, you can be better prepared for the unexpected. Whether it is an act of terrorism, a natural or a man-made disaster, you can be directly involved in saving and sustaining lives and property. Click here for a printable CERT brochure. Why should I volunteer? CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations or workplaces in basic response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area. Who should volunteer? Citizen Corps asks everyone to embrace the personal responsibility to be prepared, to get training in first aid and emergency skills and to volunteer to support local emergency responders. Volunteers can come from groups including but not limited to: • Communities of Faith What does the course involve? CERT training is a 20-hour, hands-on course in disaster response taught by local first responders. It is designed to prepare you to help yourself and others in the event of a catastrophic disaster. Some areas covered include: • Disaster Preparedness To volunteer or attend CERT training, contact the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency at 706-236-5002 or the CERT Information Line at 706-234-6617. |
