Who We Are
The Floyd County Victim Witness Assistance Program, part of the Floyd County District Attorney’s office, was established in 1986 and has grown to include a Director, Victim Notification Advocate and a Child Victim Advocate. The Victim Witness has interns and volunteers throughout the year and they are given the title Child Victim Advocate Assistants since they help the Child Victim Advocate.
What We Do
The Victim Witness Assistance Program serves
as victim advocates within the court system. Victim Witness personnel work to improve the treatment that victims receive in the criminal justice system and provide practical direction and moral support to victims of crime and their families throughout the process. Victim Witness ensures victims are afforded the rights to which they are entitled under the Georgia Crime Victims Bill of Rights. Services provided to victims by this program include, but are not limited to:
An explanation of the steps involved in the criminal justice process or juvenile justice process
Notification of all court hearings and proceedings, including scheduling changes, at the written request of the victim
Information on the status and progress of their case
A liaison with the prosecutor assigned to the case
Orientation of victims and witnesses to the courtroom and court officials
Interpreter services
Assistance with travel accommodations
Accompaniment to court proceedings
A safe and secure area for victims and witnesses to wait before testifying
Assistance in certain civil procedures, such as Family Violence hearings if there is a pending criminal case
Information and referrals to social service agencies, counseling services and other groups and individuals that can help with current issues and personal problems that the victim is facing, as well as provide long-term support
Assistance in completing forms, such as Victim Impact Statements and Victim Compensation applications and other paperwork
Location and Parking
The Victim Witness Assistance Program is located on the second floor of the Courthouse at 3 Government Plaza, Suite 220, Rome, GA. Visitors may park for one hour in the parking lot off of North Fifth Avenue that is adjacent to the building, or, for more extended periods, parking is available at the parking deck on Tribune Street behind the Law Enforcement Center.
